 TOP 10 ALBUMS of 2005
« Thread Started on Dec 4, 2005, 3:41pm »

Glasses on!

The qualifying factor should simply be: how much did i like/enjoy listening to the album? Being the most technical, original, or having a really hot guitarist (jer) can play into your decision, but only if these factors increase your enjoyment of the music. In other words, this has little to do with respect for musicians, and everything to do with the music that makes your eardrums happy.

Feel free to give some details about the album, any difficult decisions or close calls, and/or the exasperation you experienced while making you list.

The list applies to both new and old artists. Only 10!

I'll go first!

1) Sufjan Stevens - Illinoise
2) Andrew Bird - Andrew Bird and the Mysterious Production of Eggs
3) Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Self Titled
4) Patrick Wolf - Wind in the Wires
5) And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead - Worlds Apart
6) The Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen Mary
7) The Go! Team - Thunder, Lightening, Strike
8) Rogue Wave - Descended Like Vultures
9) Minus the Bear - Menos El Oso
10) Decemberists - Picaresque

The top three are pretty much interchangable. They all get 10's in my book. I tend to let the popularity of an artist effect how much I like them, or how much I profess to like them, which is why i was initially a little hesitant to give sufjan the #1 spot. But if i were the only one who knew about the album, i think i would cherish it more than any other. So much instrumentation used in a wide variety of song types. Very good stuff.

I changed the order of a few as I typed my list into this post and still feel like giving the honorable mention to animal collective, spoon, broken social scene, and hot hot heat. breaking the rules....

1. Andrew Bird - Mysterious Production of Eggs
2. Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
3. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Self Titled
4. Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen Mary
5. Arcade Fire - Self Titled EP
6. Broken Social Scene - Self Titled
7. TIE: Final Fantasy - Has A Good Home & Stars - Set Yourself on Fire
8. The Go! Team - Thunder Lightening Strike
9. Kanye West - Late Registration
10. TIE: The Game - The Documentary & Spoon - Gimmie Fiction

(Andrew Bird): Just wonderfully unique music. Not a bad song on any of his albums. This one just happened to be released in 2005. (Sufjan Stevens): Lovely multi-instrumental joy. (Clap Your Hands): Totally unique. Is this love? (Wolf Parade): A'ight, I would much rather have put their EPs on here, but this albums is a culmination of them all. Great music. (Arcade Fire): Was around in 2004, but not released til 2005. Great tunes. And if Gretchen dumps me, then I might date Regine. (Broken Social Scene): Not as great as "You Forgot..." but still amazing. A high energy band that creates a wall of sound. (Final Fantasy): The lo-fi and looping version of Andrew Bird. Awesome record, amazing live! (The Go! Team): High energy phat beats. (Kanye West): Commercial rap? Yes. But good lord, talk about a consistent album. (The Game): A first record that is fucking good. I don't like how bigtime tough he is, but there are like 6 singles on this record that are amazing. (Spoon): Too good to not include.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
*EDIT* I just found out that the Stars album came out in 2005. Pitchfork lied to me and said it came out in 2004. So I had to add it in tied for 7th. So now i have 12 albums on my top 10! Awesome!
------------------------------------------------------------------------

special mentions to: Iron & Wine - Woman King EP, Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Machine, Bright Eyes - Wide Awake, It's Morning, Slim Thug - Already Platinum, Menomena - Under an Hour, Bell Orchestra - Recording a Tape

great thread myke!
toldya he was king of new music.

*EDIT*
so i won't pretend like i have the capacity to really listen
to multiple albums, much less pay attention to the nature of a select few
for very long, so I'd like to *edit* the post to include your top four live offerings
pretty much for the same visual/chronological/historical reasons myke was balking about up there ::)

1. Mysterious Production of Eggs (Andrew Bird)
4. No Flashlight (Mount Eerie)
2. Sufjan Stevens (Illinois)
3. Self Titled (Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah)

the performances weren't limited to these albums, but each can be found under "2005". for some reason their recordings are equally present in rejuvenating my memory of how Schopenhauer put it in fewer words:

"Thus, the task is not so much to see
what no one yet has seen,
but to think what nobody yet has thought
about that which everybody sees.

i need to preface this by saying this is going to be a continuous edit until i reach my top 10 (trying to remember what came out this year is tough). also EP's should not be included in a TOP 10 ALBUMS, these are distinctly different and should have their own category.

1) Clap Your Hands... (it's unbelievable how each song builds on this album, just awesome song writing and layering! details of war, the skin of my yellow country teeth. ahhhh)

2) The Unseen - State of Discontent (punkfuckingrock. this makes you feel like you are at a show and just got your ass kicked in the pit)

3) The Aquabats - Charge! (do i need to say much well yeah took me a bit to get into it still...they only remind us that life does not need to be so serious all the time. they ditched the horns, a bit more rock but fun? shit yeah. ride the tiger!)

4) Gogol Bordello - Gypsy Punks (um, if Rant were from the US and had a Ukranian singer, not quite up the the excellence of the now mythical victorian band.)

5) The Go! Team - Thunder, Lightning, Strike (it reminds me of a 70's kung-fu soundtrack, even though i have never watched kung-fu

6) Bloc Party - Silent Alarm (the drumming really sticks out for some reason in my head )

7) The Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen Mary (so i can get some indie-cred)

8) Minus the Bear - Menos El Oso

9) AYWKUBTTOD - Worlds Apart

10) Turbonegro - Party Aninmals (with songs like "All my friends are dead" and "Wasted Again" or lyrics that are so dumb they're genius i.e. "if i ran for election, would you support my erection." really reminiscent of ramones.)

*also WTF!!?? no love for The motherfucking CONTRA? production is a little low...but COME ON!!!

...when there is nothing left to burn, myke must set himself on fire....

oh lordy. i wrote "the stars" once. my other two mentions of the band was written correctly. lordy-loo mork. you write as if i commited an ongoing cardinal sin.

and as for your overprotectiveness of the sanctity of list making... what is the point of having lists if we can't insult, defend, and slander those who are different from us? ...you should have heard what John Adams said to Thomas Jefferson the first time he posted the Declaration of Independence on a message board. that shit got FLAAAAAMED!

...i still love you though.

i understand the merit of debating things, but music seems to transcend the laws of debate/argumentation. i mean, what the fuck are you going to say to convince me, or per that your list is better than mine?
besides, the forum just isn't going to be an adequate...uhhh...forum to discuss all the ins and outs of the choices and why i believe mine work well for me. it will muddle the thread. if it hasn't done so already....

oh dear god. quote the two kids who stayed up til how late in the 916 debating about if Radiohead was good or not?

how soon we forget. how soon we forget.

BUT the bottom line is that you both are right. music is not debatable without everyone sitting in the same room with a couple fine bottles of $2 wine. ....so let's just sit back, enjoy my apology, and save the feuding for my visit in two weeks. (ps. myke's list sucks)

A visit from old intolerant Blake put forth the following criticisms/blatant make funery. This should be read in a strongbadesqe voice.

1) Sufjan Stevens - Illinoise (More like Sufjan Stevens-Can't fucking spell)
2) Andrew Bird - Andrew Bird and the Mysterious (Andrew 'this is like totally my real name' bird) Production of Eggs
3) Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Self Titled [Clap your hands say no to bad singing (and this coming from the lead singer of the contra makes it worse)]
4) Patrick Wolf - Wind in the Wires (Whats with the animal last names? Whats next, Billy Sterance?)
5) And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead - Worlds Apart (Far too violent of a name for fucking indie rockers)
6) The Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen Mary (Come on indie rockers your really need to branch out with these names. Ohh and I'm pretty sure the queen mary says for you to shut up.)
7) The Go! Team - Thunder, Lightening, Strike (Oh man these guys are lame. More like the go! home Team)
8) Rogue Wave - Descended Like Vultures (Yeah that one wave in the ocean that suddenly decides to counter all of the laws of physics by playing indie rock.. Makes sense to me.)
9) Minus the Bear - Menos El Oso (OOOO Our title is our name in spanish...so cool. Minus the bear should minus themselves.)

10) Decemberists - Picaresque (These guys played at the Dept. of uptight stuck up art wankers in A-town. That either means they suck or are All the Filthy animals, which they are not, so way to go, suck guys.

So there you are, a rant by the man...
